Wates recognise the importance of long-term community stewardship and its importance in helping to establish a new neighbourhood. To support this aim, Wates has partnered with Plunkett UK to support the creation of and long-term running of a community owned business from within the existing Chapel.
As the site sits to the north of the village, there is an opportunity for a local business on the doorstep of new residents that both serves everyday needs and helps residents connect with each other.
As part of the community engagement and consultation, Plunkett UK will work alongside Wates to explore the appetite for community ownership of the existing chapel within Sayers Common and what type of community-owned business the local community would most like to see in this building.
Plunkett’s mission is to ensure community-owned businesses create innovative and inclusive spaces benefitting everyone who lives and works nearby.
The timetable below shows the stages of Plunkett’s role through the project.

Plunkett were involved in setting up and continue to be involved in the existing community shop within the centre of Sayers Common.
99% of community-owned businesses supported by Plunkett are still operating after five years.
